Overview
Clockwork mechanisms are dense with interacting constraints: gear trains must mesh at correct center distances, the comb and drum must align within fractions of a millimeter to pluck cleanly, and the whole assembly has to come apart and go back together for tuning. This project packaged a music box movement and a cuckoo action into one mechanism.
Execution
Working in a team of four, we designed the mechanism in CAD, planned the manufacturing for each component, and machined and assembled the system, from the pinned drum down to the miniature cuckoo, iterating on fits and alignment until the action ran reliably.
